Hey lovelies!

I've been getting this question a bunch of times so I finally got to compiling this all in a single post. Gonna be showing how I usually work on a piece dissecting my old Tomb Raider one. Not my best work, but I had all the steps and files saved for this one so I could explain every stage.

So take a looksie at the link below and if you have any questions drop me a question in the blog!

P.S. A lil disclaimer: this process does not apply to my sketches and stuff. Those suckers just happen. Slap some paint, scribble around for few hours. Done. Next. :D

I was just looking through your tumblr, Love the face studies, I am trying to practice drawing portraits at the moment but they always look slightly off and take me ages, your sketches looked so clean and perfect, could you possibly give me any tips?
love your work

Hi there!

Thanks a lot for stopping by and your kind words!

First of, it's totally fine if smth takes you ages to do. Take as much time as you need to complete smth., speed comes with practice and experience it shouldn't be your main worry at all. Your main concern should be to really get a good understanding of what you're doing and do it properly.

If you say your faces look off probably you're having gaps in understanding of facial structure. Features and rendering are all icing on the cake, it will do you no good if the very base if faulty. I absolutely recommend a book by Andrew Loomis "Drawing Head and Hands". Absolutely wonderful resource for facial practices, that's how I learned mine. It takes you through all of those steps one by one (overall structure, planes, features, etc.) and creates a really solid base for your future studies so that when you're making one you already know what to look for.

And speaking of studies, those are also a crucial part of your learning curve. Just grab a photo of a face you like (always start with simple, don't go for crazy facial angles and dramatic lighting), open a new canvas next to it and try to copy that as close as you can without tracing or color picking. Just remember you're copying it not for the sake of replicating a photo, but really try to understand what's going on - how features are related to one another, how eyes look in a certain perspective, etc. Copying is just a method to understand and observe smth closely. Another thing that really helped me - do a preliminary sketch for your study, then drag it on top of the original reference and compare. See where you went wrong and why. And once you've done your study make sure you apply it as soon as possible. Close your study, open a new document and try to do smth similar from imagination. You'll get more questions as you do so and see what things you forgot, then open your study again, refresh in memory all those problematic spots, close and get to your piece again. And on and on. A pretty lengthy process, but with time it'll become your second nature and you'll be sketching those heads real fast without even thinking about it.

Hope it helped, keep creating!

Sure :D Non-fan art ones should be enabled as prints right here on dA (if it's not you can request it) and fan art ones usually have a link in the description leading to Society6 store. :)
